Partners News No. 4 - July 2000

By Dave Percival

Featured Partner - Positive Parenting Publications

This quarter we're please to feature Positive Parenting Publications, one of the most widely respected agencies in the Parenting field. They were delighted to share the news below with us.

The Home Office have granted almost £100,000 to Hampshire based charity 'Positive Parenting Publications' in a bid to help parents produce tomorrow's responsible, well-adjusted adults.

Age specific parenting workshops for ages 18 months to 13 years will be offered to parents, as part of an induction process at important points in their children's lives, such as the start of a new school. The workshops are designed to boost parents' confidence and improve relationships with their children by helping parents to build on skills they already possess, as well as, consider new ideas through discussion and group work.

PPP started producing parenting resources 10 years ago believing that parenting was becoming more complex with family units undermined and parenting often undervalued. Founder, Eileen Jones, says, "we are delighted that the need for trained and confident parents is increasingly being recognised and even more delighted to be part of meeting that need."

Some background information on all that PPP are doing:

  • PPP resources are now used in 30 countries, with more than 100,00 leaflets distributed annually throughout the UK.
  • Almost three-quarters of ALL Prisons and Young Offender Institutes use PPP resources.
  • PPP have trained over 700 presenters to facilitate their 'Time out for Parents' course nationwide. It is a 5-week user-friendly course designed to boost parents' confidence and improve their relationship with their children. It includes optional extra sessions for dads, parents of teenagers and lone parents. The course aims to help parents build on skills they already possess as well as consider new ideas through discussion and group work.
  • Last year saw the launch of a new manual, 'Parent to Parent on special needs' a major and unique resource for professionals working to support parents with special needs children. It includes sections written by parents who have first hand experience dealing with the problems.
  • More than 300 PPP training programmes were bought by trainers, professionals and health visitors in 1999.
